Adventures in NES
1989.
I can only remember vague details of my First Communion. Left hand over right, accepting the host, "Amen." My parents helped me make some sort of banner, using purple felt circles to make grapes.
But the gift I received from my parents, that memory remains vivid.
It was wrapped, but by the shape, t was clearly a Nintendo game. Soon enough the brilliant yellow box was exposed. I had Super Mario Brothers 3.
Fortunately, I don't know precisely how many hours I spent playing this and other Nintendo games, but it is fair to say that a good percentage of my youth was spent with the machine. In all honesty, I probably spent just as much time irritated, fuming, and punishing the controller as I did actually enjoying myself. Regardless, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) will remain a fine source of nostalgia.
Now, thanks to the wonders of emulation, with only a meager computer one can relive all the glory and frustration of the NES without needing the original system or games. No more blowing into the cartridges or system to get the game to start. No more agony of having an entire season of Baseball Stars lost from tripping over a cord.
Prompting this post, is something that has been discussed for some time. Finally Tyler and I decided to make it happen and spend some time playing NES baseball games.
The goal here is to play a complete game of some of the many available NES baseball games. There are some great games, there are some bad games. There are some so wretchedly awful that one wonders how it could even have been made.
Here will be our methodolgy:
1. Play a complete game (or five innings if the game is overly wretched).
2. If possible, Tyler will use the "Boston" team Stephen will use "Milwaukee."
3. Include a brief review and game results.
4. Rate the game 1-5.
Adventures in NES emulation -- reliving the glory days, remembering the greatness of old gems, and realizing how incredibly bad some games actually were.
